Tissue Donation - Our Role

In terms of the 1998 Routine Referral Law, the New York Organ Donor Network is legally responsible for contacting the next of kin of all patients who die in a hospital in the Greater New York metropolitan area, so that the option of tissue donation may be considered. That means that we contact more than 50,000 next of kin over a course of a year.
You may be contacted explains how tissues are recovered, including the role of next of kin in determining whether consent for donation is given.
Most important, whether a person has signed a New York State driver's license or New York State Organ and Tissue Donor Registry, it is essential that they share their decision with their closest family members. If a next of kin is contacted by the Donor Network at a time of unexpected death, it is so much easier to make a decision about donation, knowing in advance the loved one's wishes.
