National Donate Life Month

April is designated nationally as a time to promote organ, tissue, blood and bone marrow donation awareness. This special month, established by the United States Division of Transplantation, is called National Donate Life Month.

Throughout these four weeks, organ, eye and tissue procurement organizations across the United States, including the New York Organ Donor Network, schedule special events.

National Donate Life Month, April 2010:
SAVE LIVES. SIGN UP TO BE AN ORGAN DONOR.

During National Donate Life Month in April 2010, the New York Organ Donor Network is urging all New Yorkers to come together and save lives. The overarching theme for April is “Save lives. Sign up to be an organ donor.”

The goal is to have thousands of individuals age 18 and over add their names to the New York State Donate Life Registry. New York trails most of the rest of the nation in terms of the number of people who have enrolled in their states’ registries.

The Donor Network is leading a campaign to add one million more names to the Donate Life Registry by the end of 2012. April is the month when New Yorkers can really make a difference.

So many lives are at stake. Consider these facts:

  • More than 105,000 people in America are waiting for lifesaving transplants.

  • Approximately 9,500 people are listed in New York State.

  • As of the last week of December 2009, there were approximately 280 deceased donors in the entire greater New York metropolitan area. (Those numbers are still to be audited). And yet there were around 7,600 patients waiting for transplants in the region.

  • One organ donor can save up to eight lives.
Isn't that a great way to celebrate your life?
