Of those patients waiting for kidneys, 8,736 are 34 years of age or younger.
A total of 24,962 patients waiting for kidneys are white; 21,910 are black; 10,441 are Hispanic; and 3,977 are Asian.
In New York State , a total of 5,399 patients are on the kidney waiting list. Of these, 4,507 are listed in the Greater New York metropolitan area, the area served by the New York Organ Donor Network.
In 2004, there were 14,154 organ donors in the United States . Of these, 7,150 were deceased donors; 7,004 were living donors. Of the 12,973 kidney donors in the United States , a total of 6,326 were deceased donors; 6,647 were living donors.
Of the 12,973 kidney donors in the United States in 2004, a total of 9,049 were white; 1,727 black; 1,676 Hispanic; and 345 Asian.
Of the 27,036 organ transplants in the United States in 2004, a total of 16,003 were kidney transplants. Of these, 9,356 were from deceased donors and 6,647 from living donors.
Since 2001, a total of 62 living donor kidney transplants have been performed in the U.S. as a result of living donor kidney exchanges:
