UNITED STATES: NUMBER OF ORGAN DONORS AND TRANSPLANTS IN THE UNITED STATES :
- In 2003, there were 6,457 deceased organ donors in the United States , an increase of 4.3 percent over the previous year. This was the highest annual increase since 1998.
- In 2003, there were 6,820 living organ donors in the United States , an increase of 2.9 percent over the previous year but a smaller annual rate of increase than in recent years. Since 2001, the number of living donors in the U.S. has exceeded the number of deceased donors. More than 40 percent of kidney transplants performed in the U.S. each year are made possible through living donation.
- In 2003, 25,461 organ transplants were performed in the United States .

GREATER NEW YORK METROPOLITAN AREA: DECEASED ORGAN DONORS IN THE GREATER NEW YORK METROPOLITAN AREA, AND TRANSPLANTS FROM NEW YORK METRO DONORS:*
- In 2003, the New York Organ Donor Network received 56,725 hospital referrals.
- From all these hospital referrals, based on initial determination of medical suitability for organ donation, only 648 families of patients (or 1%) were approached for organ donation.
- Of the 648 patients, 263 families gave consent for organ donation.
- Of the 263 family consents for donation, 217 patients were ultimately deemed medically suitable and became donors.
- Consent Rate of those families of patients who were approached for organ donation: 41%
- In 2003, a total of 525 people received organ transplants with organs received from deceased donors in the Greater New York metropolitan area.
