UNITED STATES: NUMBER OF DONORS AND TRANSPLANTS IN THE UNITED STATES:
- In 2002, there were 6,182 deceased organ donors in the United States (a 1.7% increase from 2001).
- In 2002, there were 6,613 living organ donors in the United States .
- In 2002, 24,897 transplants (a 2.8% increase) were performed in the United States , of which 18,281 were from deceased donors, and 6,616 were from living donors.

GREATER NEW YORK METROPOLITAN AREA: DECEASED ORGAN DONORS IN THE GREATER NEW YORK METROPOLITAN AREA, AND TRANSPLANTS FROM NEW YORK METRO DONORS:*
- In 2002, the New York Organ Donor Network received 55,759 hospital referrals.
- From all these hospital referrals, based on initial determination of medical suitability for organ donation, only 610 families of patients (or 1%) were approached for organ donation.
- Of the 610 patients, only 247 families gave consent for organ donation.
- Of the 247 family consents for donation, only 205 patients were ultimately deemed medically suitable and became donors.
- Consent Rate of those families of patients who were approached for organ donation: 41%
- In 2002, a total of 563 people received organ transplants with organs received from deceased donors in the Greater New York metropolitan area.
