NUMBER OF DONORS AND TRANSPLANTS IN THE UNITED STATES:
- In 2001, there were 6,080 deceased organ donors in the United States , the first time that the number of deceased donors exceeded 6,000 in the nation.
- In 2001, there were 6,594 living organ donors in the United States . Not only did this number exceed 6,000 for the first time: it was the first time that the number of living organ donors in the United States exceeded those who were deceased donors.
- In 2001, 24,209 transplants were performed in the United States , of which 17,627 were from deceased donors, and 6,582 were from living donors.

ORGAN DONORS IN THE GREATER NEW YORK METROPOLITAN AREA:*
- In 2001, the New York Organ Donor Network received 55,074 hospital referrals.
- From all these hospital referrals, based on initial determination of medical suitability for organ donation, only 579 families of patients (or 1%) were approached for organ donation.
- Of the 579 patients, only 240 families gave consent for organ donation.
- Of the 240 family consents for donation, only 199 patients were ultimately deemed medically suitable and became donors.
- Consent Rate of those families of patients who were approached for organ donation: 39%.
- In 2001, a total of 533 people received organ transplants with organs received from deceased donors in the Greater New York metropolitan area.
