APPOINTS MICHAEL GOLDSTEIN, MD,
AS ITS NEW MEDICAL DIRECTOR

New York, NY, June 17, 2009: The New York Organ Donor Network has appointed Michael J. Goldstein, MD as its medical director. Dr. Goldstein’s primary responsibilities will be to oversee all organ and tissue donor management and allocation activities in the greater New York metropolitan area. He will direct quality improvement efforts and manage the development of a robust clinical research program.

Dr. Goldstein is assistant professor and assistant attending surgeon at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Medical Center. He serves as associate program director of the general surgery residency and surgical director of pediatric abdominal transplantation. Dr. Goldstein will continue in this role while assuming the medical director role.

Dr. Goldstein has served on the Donor Network’s medical advisory board, as well as many of its subcommittees. He currently chairs its Donation after Cardiac Death (DCD) committee, in an effort to increase DCD in New York State. He has been an active participant in the HRSA-sponsored Organ Transplantation Breakthrough Collaborative since its inception.

“Dr. Goldstein’s depth of commitment and enthusiasm for donation and transplantation has inspired many of us. His participation as Medical Director of NYODN will complete an exceptional management team, which is primed to take this organization to the next level,” said Elaine Berg, president and CEO of the New York Organ Donor Network.

A Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, Dr. Goldstein is a member of the American Society for Transplant Surgeons and the Association of Academic Surgeons. He serves as a medical advisor to the National Kidney Foundation of Greater New York, as well as numerous pharmaceutical and biotechnical companies for improving transplantation outcomes and patient care.

Dr. Goldstein was awarded a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Pennsylvania and a medical degree from Temple University. He was a research fellow in Columbia’s department of surgery in 2000-2001. Dr. Goldstein completed his residency in general surgery in 2003 and his Transplantation Fellowship in 2005 at the Center for Liver Disease and Transplantation, which is located at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Medical Center.
