New York's Haitian Community Embraces
Organ Donation - February 12, 2003
There is an estimated total of up to one million documented
and undocumented Haitians in the New York metropolitan area,
with the largest concentration in Brooklyn and Queens. The New
York Organ Donor Network, disturbed with the slow flow of New
York State Donor Registry materials reaching this vibrant community,
is seeking guidance from the Haitian leadership.
With the assistance of Donor Network Administrative Resident,
Beatrice Aladin, a first-generation Haitian-American Master's
degree candidate from Hunter College, and Margaret Goldstein,
Executive Director of the Haitian American Alliance, a group
of professionals, clerics and concerned citizens have agreed
to partner with the Donor Network and SUNY Downstate Medical
Center (DMC), to propel organ donor awareness for the Haitian
American Community.
Other planning members are Dr. Jean-Claude Compas; Dr. George
Casimier, DMC; Dr. Jean-Robert Chery, Mt. Sinai Hospital; Dr.
Ingrid Dodard, DMC; and Maria Yomtov, DMC.
The Donor Network has made available brochures about organ and
tissue donation in French Creole (Kréol).
