In February of 1998, my husband and I along with our children and grandchildren experienced a terrible loss. Our daughter, Suzanne, after a six-month battle with cancer, passed away. She was 39 years old, a wife and a mother. Little did we know, but a short seven weeks later my husband, Edward would suffer a heart attack and join our daughter in death. He literally died of a broken heart. In order to make some sense of our grief we donated whatever organs could be used, hoping that it would have been his wish.
The quilt square shows the things that were important in his life. At the top left is a picture of his six grandchildren. The bottom let shows Ed with his dog, Dempsey, which Suzanne thought he should have when he retired. The bottom right is a photo of his five children. Sue is in the back row on the left. His love of fishing is reflected in the charm and his Irish heritage (of which he was very proud) is shown in the shamrock charm and the fabric.
My daughter, Noreen, who created the quilt square, and myself framed copies of the square to hang in our homes as a reminder of his life, which ended too soon. |
