The stained-glass fabric depicts a modified Jacob's Ladder quilt square. God and Jacob wrestled all night on Jacob's ladder, which connected heaven and earth. In the morning Jacob pleads with God, "I will not let you go, unless you bless me." God blesses him, but Jacob is left with a limp. God blesses me with Matthew, but now that he is gone I limp through my life.
Matthew's hair was the color of the sun; his eyes the color of the sky; his voice the sound of a bird singing. In his death Matthew has emerged from the cocoon of this world and has blossomed into a beautiful butterfly.
Without the help of my friend, Judy Svenheim, this quilt square would not be.
