of directors, manages the New York Organ Donor Network
on a daily basis. The president/CEO is supported by
a group of directors who are each responsible for a
department within the Donor Network. The departments
are administrative, clinical and communications-based.

Elaine R. Berg’s Biography
Since November 1999, Elaine R. Berg, FACHE has served as President and CEO of the New York Organ Donor Network, the federally-designated organ procurement organization (OPO) serving the metropolitan New York area. The New York Organ Donor Network is responsible for the recovery of organs and tissues for transplantation, and public education efforts for a culturally and ethnically diverse population of 13 million. It is the second largest OPO in the country, with a service area including the five boroughs of New York City, Long Island, and the counties of Dutchess, Orange, Putnam, Rockland, Westchester, as well as Pike County in Pennsylvania.
Before joining the Donor Network, Ms. Berg was Vice President, Community Health Systems for New York Presbyterian Hospital. Among her duties was oversight of the operation of a system with 750,000 outpatient visits a year. Prior to that, she served as Vice President/Executive Director of the Allen Pavilion, a 250-bed community hospital in Manhattan, which is part of the New York Presbyterian system.
For eight years, Ms. Berg was Executive Vice President/CEO of the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary in New York City. She also held a series of positions at St. Luke's - Roosevelt Hospital Center, The Brooklyn Hospital Center, and Jacobi Hospital.
Ms. Berg is the recipient of numerous honors and awards. The Metropolitan Health Administrator’s Association/American College of Healthcare Executives Senior-Level Healthcare Executive Regents Award, was received in 2000. Also in 2000, Ms. Berg was appointed by Sheldon Silver, Speaker of the New York State Assembly, to the New York State Transplant Council. She still serves on this council, which advises the state's commissioner of health on matters relating to the procurement, storage, allocation, distribution, and transplantation of organs and tissues.
In April 2001, in recognition of her outstanding achievements in the areas of service to liver transplantation and organ donation awareness, Ms. Berg received the Spirit of New York Award from the Greater New York Chapter of the American Liver Foundation. In 2004, she was awarded the Association of Organ Procurement Organization’s President’s award for outstanding service to the organ procurement community.
Ms. Berg has been an active leader on the boards of organizations supporting organ, eye and tissue donation both locally and nationally. She served as a board member of the New York Alliance for Donation from 1999 through 2008, serving as board chair from 2004-2006. She also was a board member of Donate Life America, the national organization overseeing public education for organ, eye and tissue donation from 2003 through 2007.
In 2007, Ms. Berg was elected to the position of Secretary-Treasurer of the Association of Organ Procurement Organizations for a two-year term.
Ms. Berg has served on numerous work groups and committees including the transplant administrator committee of the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS).
Ms. Berg holds an MPA from New York University and a BA (Cum Laude, Phi Beta Kappa) from City College.

Michele Clayton Lucas’ Biography
Michele Clayton Lucas was appointed human resources director
in May 2000. Ms. Clayton Lucas was previously
employed at New York Presbyterian Hospital as a business and
financial administrator. Prior to that, she held the position
of business manager at the same institution.
Ms. Clayton Lucas holds a B.A. in Biology
from Fordham University and an M.B.A. in Health Care Administration
from Baruch College/Mount Sinai School of Medicine.

Jim Aranda’s Biography
Jim Aranda was appointed chief financial officer at the New
York Organ Donor Network in May 2001. Previously,
Mr. Aranda had been employed at Hazelden New York, a non-profit
substance abuse treatment facility, where he worked in various
capacities, most recently as director of financial operations.
Prior to that, he was comptroller and then administrator at
The Holliswood Hospital in Queens. He also rose through the
finance department ranks at Catholic Medical Center in Jamaica,
NY from 1982 to 1988.
Mr. Aranda holds a BS in Economics from
Cornell University and a MBA in Finance from Dowling College.

Deon Stewart-Miles’s Biography
Deon Stewart-Miles was appointed director of clinical operations at the New York Organ Donor Network in mid-September 2006. Ms. Stewart-Miles, who had been employed at the Donor Network since September 1995, held the position of interim director from May 2006, when the previous director, Rob Kochik, was tapped as the Donor Network's first-ever director of donor referral and recovery services. During her tenure at the Donor Network, Ms. Stewart-Miles has filled a variety of positions; namely, transplant coordinator, senior transplant coordinator, and since August 1999, clinical manager.
Prior to joining the New York Organ Donor Network, Ms. Stewart-Miles was a nurse in the adult intensive care unit at Harlem Hospital. She was awarded a Bachelor's degree in Nursing at the City College of New York in 1993. |

Jeff Lewis’ Biography
Jeff Lewis has been the director of donor referral and recovery services at the New York Organ Donor Network since the first week of December 2006. Mr. Lewis was promoted after serving as a clinical manager at the Donor Network for the previous 10 years.
Before he came to the Donor Network, Mr. Lewis worked as a nurse in many different settings, including the neurosurgical intensive care unit at the University Hospital of Cleveland; in the open heart unit at the Cleveland Clinic; and in the trauma and burn units at the University of Washington. Mr. Lewis also worked for seven years at LifeCenter Northwest, the organ procurement organization in Seattle.
He has a bachelor’s degree in nursing from SUNY Brockport and a master’s degree in administrative sciences from Fairleigh Dickinson University |

director of hospital and family services at the
New York Organ Donor Network is Linda Bowes.

Linda Bowes’ Biography
Linda Bowes has fourteen years of experience in the field of organ
and tissue donation and twenty years in health care marketing. Prior to
joining the Donor Network as director of hospital and family services,
she held the position of hospital services manager for the New Jersey
Organ and Tissue Sharing Network, where she helped pioneer a marketing
approach to increase hospital participation in the organ and tissue
donation process.
Presently, Ms. Bowes and her staff service the 103
hospitals in the Donor Network's service area, providing research and
information for health care professionals, as well as assisting hospitals
in adhering to all applicable state and federal laws and regulations
regarding donation. Members of the family services staff under Ms. Bowes’
direction offer the opportunity of donation to potential donor families
and provide after care services.
Ms. Bowes graduated from Rutgers
University with a BS in Marketing.

Waheed Tajik's biography
Mr. Tajik joined the Donor Network in September 2007 from the Mary Manning Walsh Home in New York. As the Director of Quality Management at Mary Manning Walsh Home, Mr. Tajik acted as liaison between the Catholic Health Care System Corporate Board and the facility. Among his areas of responsibility at the home was oversight of CDC and CMS regulatory standards, as well as compliance with regulatory standards at the state level. Mr. Tajik has held educational positions at various academic institutions and has also taught Standards of Care at professional agencies.
Prior to his most recent engagement at Mary Manning Walsh Home, Mr. Tajik spent the first half of 2002 as the home’s Nurse Manager. From mid-2002 through the end of 2005, he was the facility’s Director of Quality Management. In 2006, he was Corporate Director of Performance Improvement, Community Services at the Jewish Home and Hospital in New York.
Mr. Tajik holds a BSN degree from Hunter College in New York, and an Associate in Applied Science in Nursing from the Borough of Manhattan Community College in New York. Mr. Tajik, who was a licensed Medical Doctor in Pakistan after graduating from Ayub Medical College at the University of Peshawar, is currently completing a Master of Science in Health Care Management at New York University.

Julia Rivera’s Biography
Julia Rivera is the director of communications for the New York Organ Donor Network, one of 58 organ procurement organizations in the United States. In this role, she is responsible for developing and implementing a variety of awareness campaigns to develop public understanding about the importance of organ and tissue donation in the greater New York metropolitan area.
Ms. Rivera has more than 26 years experience in administration and management of human service systems, and has held several executive positions in government, non-profit community organizations, and academic institutions, including service with Lincoln Medical Center in the Bronx, Cornell University Family Life Development Center, New York State Division for Youth, and SUNY Health Science Center in Brooklyn. She was the second woman to serve as Executive Director of Aspira of New York, the largest youth leadership development organization in New York City.
Ms. Rivera holds a Master’s degree in human services from Lincoln University in Pennsylvania and a certificate in Public Administration from New York University’s Wagner Graduate School of Public Service and the New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation, and is a graduate of the Coro Hispanic Women Leadership Program.
A native of Puerto Rico, Ms. Rivera is a member of several professional and community organizations, including the Healthcare Public Relations and Marketing Society, the National Hispanic Health Executives - East Coast Chapter, and the United Network for Organ Sharing Communications Committee.
Prior to her work at the Donor Network, Ms. Rivera was the associate executive director for Public Relations at Lincoln Medical Center in the Bronx.
